PROF. WURAOLA SHOKUNBI WAS A QUINTESSENTIAL TEACHER AND MENTOR
I had the privilege of being one of the student mentees of Professor Wuraola Shokunbi while I was a medical student at the University of Ibadan College of Medicine.

I led the Federation of African Medical Students Associations (FAMSA) at a trying period in the life of the association, when I not only served as the HQ Administrator but also as the Acting President, as there was no elected executive. Prof. Shokunbi as a staff adviser was very instrumental to many of our key accomplishments, especially the implementation of the FAMSA Youth Agenda. Her counsel helped me to navigate through the clinical training with minimal academic challenges despite my high mobility as an international student leader.
More so, I was a Peer Educator trained by Prof. Shokunbi through the CEHAIN Project. I later founded the HIV/AIDS Prevention Promotion Youth (HAPPY) Club in 2006 and she was our advisory consultant. She was the Keynote Speaker at the first ever UI Student Leaders Summit on HIV/AIDS we organised on 30th November 2006.

At a period many consultants or professors appeared scary to students, Prof. Shokunbi granted me access, took me like a son and gave me learning opportunities. In 2007, I started facilitating HIV workshop trainings as a student, was paid 10k per session, all thanks to her. She did similar favour to many other students.
As a haematologist, she’s that doctor any patient would be happy to have. She was that teacher many UCH medical students loved to learn from, and wished to be examined by her (medics would understand). Prof. Shokunbi is an accomplished teacher, quintessentially sound medical professional and researcher and caring mother of many. She delivered her Valedictory Lecture at the UI College of Medicine on 31st July 2023 having reached 70 years.

In her retirement, I wish her a fulfilled life, very sound health and long years of happiness. Congratulations, the eminent Prof. Wuraola Shokunbi!
