For years, the Amangbala people suffered in silence. The health facility they had was in shambles. Deteriorated with no electricity and no drugs, the condition didn’t make room for any health worker posted to cope and survive.

The people of Amangbala would go all the way to other villages just to access basic healthcare from missionary hospitals or risk emptying their pockets in order to patronize the private hospitals in the village, in cases of emergency.

The situation eventually got better for the people of Amangbala when they realized they could take their health matters into their own hands.

A health committee was set up on 13th of March 2022 as a result of the consistent advocacy by the TalkHealth Real Media Ltd through the Open Society Initiative For West Africa (OSIWA) sponsored Radio show in Ebonyi tagged TalkHealth 9ja Radio Show where they campaigned fervently for the formation of Community/Village Health Committee and strengthening of existing ones as required by the National Health Act 2014 and referenced in the Ward Health System developed by the Government of Nigeria.

A sensitization program was then organized by the Make Our Hospital Work team in collaboration with talkhealth 9ja with support from OSIWA to properly educate and guide their activities in setting up their very own primary healthcare centre.

To this effect, a townhall meeting was organized for 9th May 2022.The townhall meeting focused on sensitization of the attendees, villagers and health workers alike, on the need for a primary healthcare centre in their village and it called for support from the villagers to spearhead the construction and setting up of the new health care facility.

The villagers pledged to take responsibility for some items after the need list was read out loud.

The Health Committee went further to solicit for and receive the 42 year old town hall under construction as the new site of the health care facility.

The hall was partitioned to give rooms for their primary health center with tiling, furnishing and equipment remaining for the place to become fully operational.

The committee reported to have raised and spent over 7 million naira gotten from rent of the community structures like plaza, shops, residential buildings, in working on the new site and still in need of about 10 million naira to complete other construction work including installation of windows, electrification and plumbing of the building.

As the construction and solicitation for funds is ongoing, the health committee is leaving no stone unturned in making sure the Amangbala people are well educated and enlightened on health matters as they organize sessions and health promotion activities like the classes with expectant mothers guiding them through their health issues.

At last, the Amanagbala people in Ebonyi State will experience primary healthcare at its best once the construction and furnishing is completed.

This was made possible by the Make Our Hospital Work sensitization campaigns in partnership with OSIWA and presented by TalkHealth9ja Media.
