United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on Thursday talk say about 2.5 million pikins under the age of five for Naija dey suffer from severe acute malnutrition.
UNICEF nutrition specialist, Ms. Abigail Nyukuri, talk this thing for the two-day media dialogue on integrated and timely response to nutrition-related humanitarian needs, wey them organise for Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. According to her, 440,000 boys and girls under age five for Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe States dey affected by the disease for this year, 2019.
Nyukuri, talk say pikins wey dey suffer from severe acute malnutrition choke for the three Northeastern states, she blame insecurity and other conditions for this problem. “This conditions don make the severe acute malnutrition situation even worse for Rann (Kala Balge), South Yobe, Magumeri, Jere, and Konduga LGAs.
“Other conditions wey dey affect these states na poor food security situation, sub-optimal Water, Hygiene, and Sanitation practices and high Disease Burden.” UNICEF warn say if these things continue for several parts of Nigeria, poverty levels go increase in years to come.
“Malnutrition dey cause wahala for pikin life, because a malnourished children no dey grow well, them no dey strong, and them no too get sense and thinking capacity. “All these and other issues combine to to cause poverty, because the children no fit do wetin them suppose fit do and them no fit become better adults.
